In the late 19th century, village of Te Wairoa was New Zealand's most popular tourist destination because of two terraces of geothermal pools. One night in 1886, an earthquake triggered the erruption of three nearby volcanoes, which buried the town, killed 150 people and completely destroyed the terraces. This museum is at the site of Te Wairoa and contains some items which were excavated from the mud.
