![]() As I approached this, I wondered why there was a light under the bridge even though there's nowhere near enough clearance above the water for anybody to go through there. It turns out that this is a "drop lock". It's an alternative to a swing bridge for a situation where there is only occasional boat traffic and it would be a nuisance to close the road. What happens is that a boat sails into the lock, the water level then drops so that the boat can pass under the bridge, then the water comes back up to the level of the rest of the canal and the boat sails out and carries on its way. Unlike normal locks which work by water naturally flowing downhill, lowering the water level here requires pumping and apparently the whole process takes about 40 minutes.
