The chain has somehow got itself wedged between the small cog and the bike frame, and also forced its way between the large cog and the frame, scraping some of the paint off as it went. To fit through there it must have temoprarily bent the cog wheel. The only way I can get it out is to break this chain, unthread it and then replace it with my spare. The chain which I'm going to have to break was put on the bike yesterday morning so it only managed about 100 km. After I replace it I won't have another spare. I'm reluctant to carry on riding without a spare, especially if the crank shaft might have moved in a way which is going to make this kind of failure more common.
