 Carcassonne, where planes fly surprisingly low over the city centre. I had difficulty getting off the motorway again on the way here. This time I got off in the right place but had trouble with the toll machine. The way some sections of motorway work is that you take a ticket from a machine when you enter, then when you leave you put that ticket into another machine which looks up how far you have come and charges you accordingly. That part worked out okay but on then it wouldn't accept any payment: the contactless card reader lit up but didn't work, I couldn't get my card into the card slot because it felt like there was already one in there, the banknote input did nothing when I tried to poke a note into it, and I didn't have enough change to pay in coins. After a few tries, I gout out and asked the people in the car behind me whether they would use their card to pay if I gave them a 10 euro note. The woman made several attempts but the machine wouldn't accept her card either and anyway the pair of them turned out to be Italian so they didn't understand at first when I tried talking to them in French and they were no better than I was at using the helpline intercom. After a while, they gave up and exited through a different lane. I couldn't do that because the machine had taken my ticket. After a while I noticed one payment option which I hadn't tried: the card reader above head-height which is meant to be for lorry drivers. That worked so I was able to carry on my way.
