 Parking the bike here to keep the rain off it didn't completely work. The bench and the back end of the bike are both wet. I found how to stop the floodlights shining into my room in the end: it turned out that there was a third set of curtains, which did close. Also, I haven't broken a toilet since the first two days but the one in my room here did get its float valve stuck so that the tank was constantly filling. It took me a while to work out that that was the problem because the overflow from the tank discharged down a dedicated pipe rather than just going down the toilet bowl.
