America is amazing sometimes. I had planned to spend Friday afternoon and Saturday, with my car, searching the city for everything I need to package my bike and the rest of my luggage for going on the flight. I just walked ten minutes up the road to have dinner and I've found it all. If you disassemble a bike completely, you can rearrange the parts to be smaller than airlines' maximum suitcase size but bike bags are always significantly bigger than that. The United Airlines website says that they charge $200 for a bike in a bag but only $100 if you pack it up to suitcase size. Here I have:
A suitcase for my other luggage.
Two rolls of inch-thick foam to protect the bike.
300 metres of clingfilm. I wanted less but this was the best I could find.
Sticky tape
Three paint rollers. The tubes inside will be good for bracing the bike's forks when the wheels aren't there.
A hacksaw to trim the paint rollers to the correct lengths.
Straps to make the wrapped bike easier to carry.
A weighing scale. On the way over here, my bags were under the limit by 400g and 800g so I had better check again this time.
A luggage label because one of my old ones disappeared on the flight over here.
A new shirt so that I don't have to sit next to people for hours on the flight in a shirt which has been washed in showers for a month.
Some food.
I got all that even at ten o'clock at night in a Wal-Mart which is partly closed off for renovation. I did manage to cause a paper jam in the till though. When I left, there were two employees trying to fix it.
