I'm waiting in the bike shop now while the bike has its tyres changed and I've just seen a train coming across the level crossing outside. I think it's the first passenger train I've seen on this whole trip. The people in this shop were all marvelling at how fast my old back tyre had gone bald. The new tyres are Schwalbe Marathons. I like those. They are normally good. I started the trip with two of those but in a slightly wider size than the new ones. I'm also having new pads put on the back brake, to replace the existing ones which are severely worn and partly cracked. Strangely, when I test them afterwards, the new pads wouldn't actually be much better at stopping the bike than the old ones. For some reason, the people who serviced the bike put the saddle as high as it would go and then denied that they had done it. It was far too high to sit on. Then a man came in saying that he wanted his bike repaired but didn't have any money. The man who, I assume, owns this shop responded by going outside and doing the repairs on the pavement in front of the shop. I don't know if there's some legal reason why he couldn't do free repairs in here.
