 The sign calls Hiawatha "City of Beautiful Maples" and then boasts that it was the birthplace of somebody called John B McLendon Junior, who was a basketball player and civil rights pioneer. It seems a bit funny to me that the town makes a fuss about him rather than Hiawatha himself.
