Sheffield's other team is Sheffield Wednesday, originally a cricket club which played its matches on Wednesdays. This is their stadium, Hillsborough. First match 1899. Its capacity is now 39732 and its record attendance is 72841.

It was the incident of overcrowding here in 1989 which has led to the requirement that all spectators in the top two divisions should have assigned seats, which in turn has led to the reduction in the numbers of people allowed into almost all of the old grounds and to the moves by many clubs to new premises.

Part of the cause of the incident was the rise in hooliganism during the 1970s and 1980s, which often lead to the police treating fans more like prisoners than like theatre-goers and was why at most grounds, the fans were kept in cages.

Lord Taylor's report into the incident recommends some laws that should be passed to improve safety, such as the requirement for designated seats, but also considers how to improve the behaviour of fans. His suggestions range from simply providing more rubbish bins in order to combat the mindset that some antisocial behaviour such as dropping litter was required at football games, up to a complete ban on anybody watching a match other than people registered in a national database as supporters of the home team. I'm glad the latter suggestion wasn't implemented. If it had been, I wouldn't have been allowed to see matches at four grounds like I have in the last eight days.
