Sadly, another reason why Burnden Park is notable is because of the disaster here in 1946 where too many people crowded into one of the stands at the start of the match and 33 people at the front got crushed to death. I know it was only a year after the end of the war and people were probably more familiar with death than they are now but it still seems remarkable that the game was resumed after about half an hour, with the 33 bodies lying at the side of the pitch, somewhere inside where Asda is now.
