 Oh dear. One of the welds has broken on my panier rack. I happened to notice this morning that I have inadvertently booked a hotel for tonight next to another Halfords so for a moment I thought I would be needing to go there and look for a new rack. However, the broken weld on this one is jagged enough that if I just strap the pieces together tightly, it might stop the broken piece being able to move up or down. After I did that and moved some of the weight to the other panier, the rack would feel fine for the rest of the day so it might be able to last the rest of the trip. It nearly didn't last another ten minutes though. Neither did the rest of the bike. A car which had been sitting in stationary traffic suddenly had a change of plan and tried to turn off and accelerate into an adjacent side street just as I was crossing that street. I only just managed to get the bike out of its way.
