After going up and down the big hill again, and battling against that incredible wind for about 10 km to get back to Milton, I'm now back within sight of where I was over three hours ago. I'm afraid I've become rather demoralised during that time and I'm going to stop at that motel there for the night. It's a shame not to make use of the tailwind along this road and it's also a shame because I've booked a room with another spa bath in Dunedin and I've been looking forward to it for days but if I tried to get there now and anything else went wrong, I would run the risk of arriving both in the dark and after the hotel's quoted last check-in time.

I think my lack of motivation might partly come from the fact that I have now seen everything I wanted to see in New Zealand: Lake Tekapo, Alpha Centauri, the Einstein illusion, a penguin and Nugget Point. Apart from Christchurch, there's nothing to look forward to between here and Wellington and there are bound to be lots of hills. I thought that travelling up the coast would be easier than going through the mountainous centre of the island but it isn't and I don't think any of New Zealand will be. I don't think I'll be able to do a full cycling tour of both islands in the time available so I'm now thinking seriously about hiring a car for part of the journey.
