 From what I gather, some of which has come from information boards around this part of the town, the four members of the Kelly Gang wanted to kill all the local police so they committed a murder in another nearby town and then sabotaged the railway line to derail the train which would take the police and journalists to investigate. They also took everybody in Glenrowan hostage in the hotel which stood on this site, presumably so that they couldn't warn the police, but one of them escaped and stopped the train. The police then came to here and there was a prolonged shootout which lasted all night and into the next day. After the hostages were released, the police burned the hotel down, which was unnecessary as three members of the gang nad already been shot and Ned himself somehow escaped into some trees and started shooting from there. The police fired back and, according to one of the notices, he sustained 28 gunshot wounds before he gave up. He was then arrested and was hanged a few months later. These woodne figures show where the police and gang member were during the night. I don't know who the three figures which were on the station platform are meant to represent though.
