Although I have seen a lot of people riding bikes this afternoon, I didn't find any extant bike shops in Katoomba. There are lots of places selling climbing and walking equipment but they didn't have any bike stuff. One man in the street made a comment to me about it being a hot day for cycling so I asked him if he knew of a bike shop and the only one he knew was back in Wentworth Falls, about 6 km back down the hill.

I then found a sign which pointed up some stairs to somewhere which called itself something like an outdoor activities advice centre. There were some wetsuits and some climbing equipment up there so the people there must actually organise some activities themselves but the signs pointed into an office with two women who seemed happy to just give advice. They thought about various shops which might have helmets, such as supermarkets, and decided that they probably wouldn't. They also did a bit of web browsing and found that there would be no bike shops on my route for a couple of days so they also highly recommened Bike Minded, the place at Wentworth Falls. If I had stayed on the main highway, I would have passed it myself earlier but I came on that back road past the lake instead. They said I could get there on the train and as I've seen, there are frequent trains on this line but I didn't fancy doing the 10 minute walk from the station to the bike shop with my heavy bags, and also I want to see if I can get from Sydney to Melbourne with no powered transport at all.

I have come back to Wentworth Falls on the bike and got a helmet easily. I didn't take a picture of the bike shop but this is the pie shop next door, which I also enjoyed.

I don't know what kind of legends are told of the Jamis Aurora Elite around here but the people in the bike shop were impressed by it and while I was standing having a drink outside the outdoor advice place, a man came and stared at it and said he had never seen one in real life before.
