 A verst was a unit of 3500 feet, or 1066.8 metres. The places mentioned are Paris, Warsaw and Berlin on the left, and Moscow and Kazan on the right, although it looks to me like the distances for Warsaw and Berlin are the wrong way round. This sign seems to imply that that terrible dirt track which I've just come along was once the Paris-to-Moscow road. I suppose in a sense it still is, in that I've come from Paris and I'm going to Moscow.
