 At last, the tarmac returns. Unfortunately, just after this, I found that something, presumably a sharp stone, had made a hole right through my back tyre and into the tube. I decided that in order to reduce the stress on the tyre, I should swap it back onto the front wheel, in the process of doing which, I somehow managed to break the valve off the other inner tube. As a result, the two spare tubes which I bought just after leaving Paris ended up getting used within minutes of each other.
