The French people in that car are braver that I am to try ordering through a drive-through intercom in Portugese. I have no idea why but there are French cars everywhere in this region. For something to do, I made a survey this afternoon and found that in 200 cars, there were 171 Portugese, 19 French, 5 Italian, 3 Swiss, 1 British and 1 German. Surprisingly, I have seen vey few Spanish cars all day, even though the border is now pretty close.

The man who sold me some water in a petrol station finished with a Spanish "Gracias", rather than a Portugese "Obrigado". I don't know if he thought I was Spanish. I was pretty obviously foreign, as I was doing a lot of pointing and smiling and not much talking, but I would have thought that if somebody seemed foreign around here, it would be a reasonable guess that they were French.
