I thought the Bulgarian roads were good compared to the Serbian ones but this road is fantastic. I have a sholder as wide as a traffic lane and the tarmac is lovely and smooth right to the edge. It's great to be able to enjoy the scenery and not have to watch the road surface all the time.

I noticed that some of the slip roads which I passed bore blue square signs depicting the front of a car. That's a symbol which is used in several countries and seems to denote some kind of half-motorway, the exact nature of which I have never worked out. I don't know if I'm really meant to be here. There was no such sign on the main carriageway, which took me about 50 km from the border to Orestiada. I made a point of not getting off this road so that I wouldn't have to pass such a sign by getting back on again.

It's not as if there's anybody here to complain anyway. I read an account last night from some cyclist who said the police had told him to use the new motorway in this area before it had properly opened. This is probably the road and it doesn't seem to have changed much since then.

I did see one Scottish car three times. The middle time was when its driver had stopped to rescue a turtle from the middle of the road. I also saw a pair of cyclists going the other way so I don;t think I should worry too much about whether I should be here.
