That will be Bulgaria then. Getting out of Serbia was easy. I gave the border guards my passport and hotel registration cards and kept the other documents back for when they started asking questions. They never did though. Instead, they just chuckled, gave my passport back and let me go. At the time, I thought they were laughing at the number of hotels I had been to in Serbia but it may actually have been because they knew where the Hotel Stara is. They didn't even question how I had got here when the only road here is a motorway.

There are a lot of checkpoints to go through on this road. First there was a booth which I think was for changing money but it didn't have a barrier so I didn't stop, then Serbian passport control, then the grey booth by the car in the picture, which is on the actual border but seems to do nothing, then Bulgarian immigration, then customs, then somewhere to buy a vignette to allow vehicles to use the Bulgarian highways and finally somewhere which seemed to be collecting an entrance fee for vehicles. I didn't have to pay at the last two but still had to sit in the queue. I don't know what the proceedure was at the last booth. It had two windows only a couple of metres apart. Motorists seemed to have to pay at the first, where they were given a memory stick which they then had to hand in at the second.
