After a while, I came to another bridge like the one shown in the previous picture. The sign had a number 6 on it, which I realised with some horror meant that there were actually 7 bridges to cross. Each one seemed to have an extra trick up its sleeve; it might be slightly uphill for instance, or in a region where the wind buffeted me from side to side. It was as if the Arizona Department of Transportation were deliberately trying to make the bridges as challenging and dangerous as possible. By the time I had finished number 4, I already had a vision of what the joke would be with number 3 and I turned out to be spot on: it crosses the river lengthways, running above it along the bottom of the gorge for several hundred metres. Perhaps I should work for AZDOT. I might be able to offer a few suggestions of my own. Here's one: how about a road with a giant set of mechanical jaws across it...
