This is Valerie, from West Virginia, who guards the entrance to the tunnel. I spent a while here while waiting for a pick-up truck to arrive. She was very chatty and I suppose I would have liked her if she hadn't been the one imposing the tunnel rule. "You wouldn't like it in there" she said. She obviously doesn't know me. The 7 km Nordkapptunnel was one of the most fun parts of my Norway ride, as I told her. It didn't do any good though. Amazingly, the guards at the two ends of the tunnel periodically close off traffic in one direction to allow vehicles through which are too big to fit properly, communicating with each other by radio and by means of some kind of baton carried by the last vehicle, but they won't even alow me to ride through with one of those convoys. There's a 20 mile per hour speed limit and the tunnel is slightly downhill in this direction so I wouldn't even have trouble keeping up. Unbelievable.

Valerie was reading the recently-published final Harry Potter book but said she was taking it slowly because she didn't want to get to the end. It's a shame I haven't read it; it would have been fun to tell her how it ends.
