The entrance to Zion Park, where I was given the crushing news that I wouldn't be allowed through the tunnel. "It's not a problem" said the idiot in the box, "you can get a ride in somebody's pick-up truck". He really didn't seem to think that was an utterly stupid suggestion at all. If I had wanted to do that sort of thing, I could have just got a train all the way from New York. In fact, I could have just stayed at home because that's where I'm going to end up at the end of all this. What really annoys me is why none of those three enormous signs calling themselves "tunnel and shuttle information", which I passed 11 miles ago, made any mention of bicycles whatsoever.

While I was stopped alongside the hut being dealt this blow about the tunnel, I felt all the air come rushing out of the front tyre. Surprisingly, it wasn't the tyre wall which had burst. This time, the valve had blown off.
