There were a couple of cattle grids on this road, for which I dismounted as I was still nervous about the condition of the bike. This though is just a painting of one. Does it really fool the cows?

A little while ago, there was suddenly a loud and prolonged escape of air from the rear tyre. It turns out that the reason the tyre was deformed was because it was splitting along one side where the rim grips it. I've had that happen a couple of times in the past and it has always spelled disaster; I've never been able to repair it. However, on each of those occasions there was a railway station within walking distance. The nearest town wich has either a bike shop or a means of getting away other than on the bike is Moab, which is still 60 miles away. I used 3 of my last 4 patches on the tyre, rather than the inner tube, which is something I have never tried before, put the broken tyre on the front wheel and ran it at as low a pressure as I sensibly could. Amazingly, unlike on the previous occasions, the tube didn't immediately burst again. I've come a few miles with it now. It's lucky that the bike shop in Pueblo fitted extra-thick inner tubes which seem almost like tyres themselves.
