I've brought a piece of ethernet cable with me but not a dial-up modem cable because I didn't think there would be a number that I could dial. The literature about the wireless network on the ship says there is a dial-up server which you can access from your own cabin but I only thought today to look into the idea of scrounging a bit of cable for it. The help desk outside the computer room didn't have any and told me to phone my cabin steward, who sent a maintenance person with one.

My laptop now has a stable network connection but unfortunately the web server onto which I'm trying to upload my pictures still isn't working. I wonder if I'm expected to give this cable back when I get off. I find it a bit disconcerting that my steward always knows my name, even if I meet him when I'm not near my room. It's as if the stewards were sent pictures of their guests as soon as we were photographed at Southampton and immediately started trying to learn the names.

I can't help feeling that there's some kind of Big Brother presence on this ship, especially as it was announced at the lifeboat drill that hey don't bother taking a roll call any more since they have better ways of knowing who's there.
