As well as the dodgy wheel, I had more gear trouble today. The cable for the rear mechanism snapped in the same way as the one for the front mechanism did in Ohio. In both cases, when there is no control from the cable the mechanism defaults to the smallest cog but at the rear, that means the highest gear. My chain is also too long to use the smallest cog at the front when I'm using the smallest one at the back so I was limited to two very high gears. With two long uphill sections to come, that wasn't very helpful. As a bodge, I've fastened the gear cable into these screws to lock the rear mechanism in its second lowest gear, which gives me the choice of three gears, the highest of which is adequate for use on flat ground. It's worked better than I expected and I've gone over the first hill with little trouble. Descending can be a bit boring though. Rolling down a gentle slope at about 25 km/h feels incredibly slow, especially if it follows on from a steeper descent, but it's still too fast for my legs to keep up. I just have to sit still and wait to get to the bottom.

There's a bike shop in Montrose, where I'm heading today. I've heard it doesn't open on Mondays but perhaps it might be open tonight or tomorrow. Riding all the way to Moab like this would be a bit depressing.
