Here's the motel. Its name is slightly different from that listed on my map but the policewoman loitering in a car outside says it's the only motel in the town. It's definitely open because I've seen some guests going in and out of rooms. The office is locked but there's a sign saying to ring the doorbell. I did, three times, but nothing happened. I did manage to get through to the motel on a very bad phone line from the payphone at the petrol station next door. Worryingly, I got another answering machine asking me to leave my name and number. It looks like booking a hotel in this region might be a process which you have to start several days before you want to go there, and which requires you to have a telephone number on which you can reliably contacted. If that's the case, I'm in trouble. On the other hand, it is worth noting that when I have managed to make reservations in advance, the hotels have always had a record of them and been expecting me when I arrived. That hasn't always been the case on previous trips.
