Many of the towns have signs at the entrances honouring individuals or teams who have had some success in the last few years, normally of a sporting nature. This one does seem to be pushing things a bit though. As I passed a bank earlier, the big matrix display board flashed up that it was somebody's birthday. I don't know if they were an employee or just an account holder. I suppose the bank must have everybody's date of birth.

I'm quite impressed at having reached Vandalia. Having had to wait until nine o'clock for the bike shop to open, and then another hour because I was having a lie-in and a big breakfast, then watching the bike mechanic lose the will to live for two hours, I had pretty much written today off as a short one. However, it seems that Champion the Wonderbike has brought me 100 miles in not much more than 8 hours so, like last night, I'm still only 20 miles behind schedule.

While phoning to book a hotel in Vandalia a couple of hours ago, I was also reminded that it's an hour earlier than I had thought since Illinois is in the central time zone. I had known that the time zones were a bit funny here and that one half of one of these states didn't observe daylight saving time but I wasn't sure which region that was. A web search turned up a site which has compiled information on the subject from various different sources which all contradict each other. I would have thought somebody around here must know what time it is. It also said that the time zones were due to change last year but nobody had decided what the changes should be.
