Do you think a four-lane highway is really necessary here? It's amazing how suddenly the traffic disappears when you leave a city. Interstate 70, which follows the same route as highway 40 for several days of my ride, is about 1800 metres to the right here. It also has four lanes and seems to be a very similar type of road but is swarming with traffic. Perhaps it has a higher speed limit or something.

The rain had just about stopped at this point and the temperature was about to rise at what I considered a surprising rate. Within about ten minutes, the road would be completely dry.
