The small hills stuck around for a little longer than I had expected but they really will end in a few miles. I've managed to repair the gears, by the way. I took the gear lever apart and found a little bit of metal stuck inside so I removed it. Part of me can't help thinking that operating an item with fewer components than it originally had is less than ideal but it's working at the moment. I roughly planned where I would be spending each night a few months ago now. I remember coming back to the plan a couple of weeks later and being alarmed at how the intended distances between overnight stops dramatically increased at about this point, and wondered what had ever made me think I would suddenly be able to ride so much further. Of course, I won't be riding any further each day; it's just that the roads have stopped messing about now and are heading decidedly west.
