These green signs mark the cycle route I'm following. One of several routes marked out by the Pennsylvania Department of Transport, Route S runs pretty much along the southern edge of the state. I joined it shortly after crossing over from New Jersey and have been following it ever since. It uses good quiet roads and is probably doing its best at staying as flat as possible, although that's not very easy as Pennsylvania is a hilly place. The signs are very good though. Whenever you have to make a turn, there are several of them to make sure you get it right, although if you stay on one road for a long way without turning, they do tend to just leave you to it. Normally, I end up spotting one in the distance at the point where I'm about to get the map out to make sure I haven't gone the wrong way. Rather nicely, they also specify the direction in which you are following the route, to prevent the kind of problem where you lose the route for a while and then pick it up again going the wrong way. British cycle route signs don't do that.

The 'share the road' signs weren't so common further east but seem to coincide with almost every Route S sign. I don't know who I'm expected to share it with; there's virtually nobody else here.
