 The murals in and around this underpass list events from Carlisle's history. Here it says that the Reverend Sidney Swann cycled to London in 24 hours in 1902. That's pretty good going given what the bike and the roads must have been like in those days. I guess he must have started by going over Shap summit, where I was yesterday.
