 Breakfast here is quite generous. The owner of this place has been speaking to me in a mixture of English and French, but must have thought that Italian was the best way to explain what the coiled green thing on the side of the table nearest to the dog is for. She called it a contra-vespa. It's slowly burning and producing smoke. I don't know whether it's suppose to repel the wasps or send them to sleep. What has actually happened is that they have all gone to sleep in the bowls of jam and marmalade.
