The fort was completed in 1593, had its last battle in 1672 and was a military installation until 1851. After that, it became a village. In 1960, it was restored to its 1742 state and became a museum, although some people do still live here though. The woman in this picture is obviously one of the museum staff. The very large young man who served me in the tourist information office was also in period costume, which seemed weirder considering what that building looks like. On the left is the flag of Bourtange, which illustrates the shape of the fort.
