The two pieces of metal are earth contacts and are meant to be like the one at the top. They should be springy and recess into the housing when a plug is inserted. The bottom one here has got crushed so I tried a different socket and found that the same thing had happened there, as if a previous guest had been unable to hammer their plug into one socket so had tried doing the same thing on a different one. I did manage to bend one of them back into shape but I wasn't completely happy with poking tools into a type of mains socket that I'm not particularly familiar with.
