I cleaned the pedal and took it apart to see what the situation was. Comparing it to old photographs from this morning showed that the cap off the end of the crankshaft has disappeared but that didn't look essential. It looked like I would be able to just put the pedal back in place and tighten a couple of bolts but a sticker on it said that they had to be tightened to between 12 and 14 Newton metres with a torque wrench. I don't have any feel for how tight that it so I've brought it to a bike shop to get it done professionally. The man here just tightened it by hand, saying that he never uses torque wrenches. He and also pointed out that the end cap was missing but he didn't seem to think it was serious. It was very quick and he didn't charge me for it. It was pretty much what I would have done myself but it's reassuring to have had a professional opinion.
