The original St. Anne's Church here was built in 1776. After Belfast was awarded city status in 1888, it was decided that the church should be replaced with a new cathedral. According to an information board, so that church services could continue to take place, the nave of the new cathedral was built around the old church and then the old church inside it was demolised.
