The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. For most of the length of the US Atlantic coast, deposition has created a situation where there are sand bars and islands next to the ocean, with rivers behind them flowing parallel to the coast. It didn't require much additional work for the Army Corp of Engineers to join them up to form an almost continuous shipping channel running all the way from Boston to the Southern tip of Texas.
