There are no green walls tonight. I had hoped to be here before four o'clock but what with the hills, the slight headwind, the gravel, the floods and the punctures, I didn't get here until after seven. The dogs didn't slow me down but they contributed to my feeling that it was a bad day. As a result, I've been in a hurry ever since I arrived so it's only now I've got out of the shower that I've noticed what a nice room this is. On the outside, the building is a dull grey single-storey block. The man in the room next to mine is a keen cyclist from Florida who is on his way back from mountain biking in Colorado. He had two high-end bikes on the back of his car and has taken them into his room to keep them safe overnight. While I was checking in, he was admiring my bike. He was particularly impressed by the tyres. Like the man in the bike shop yesterday, he holds Schwalbes in very high regard. I don't know why. They couldn't even manage two miles on Missouri's stony roads. On that subject, I only realised yesterday that the Les Schwab tyre centres which I saw all over Oregon have nothing to do with the Schwalbe company which makes tyres.
