 After Harry Truman's time as president ended, he returned to live in Independence full time and had no security provision apart from the low fence around the garden which you could see in the previous pictures, and some bushes to shield the back porch from public view. After President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, it was decided that all former presidents should have protection so the Secret Servece moved into this house, a few doors away. Apparently, they never had much to do here and generally spent their time doing odd jobs at the Truman house, such as mowing the lawn. The only time they did respond to an emergency was when the Trumans' grandson visited once and pressed the panic button by mistake.
