I grew up in Luton and in the late 1980s, it seemed strange to me that my dad would support a funny low-ranking team like Wolves when Luton Town were healthily in the middle of the top division. I see now that that was just a temporary state of affairs, at a time when Wolves were underfunded to the extent that one of the stands was condemned and had to remain empty.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Wolves were one of the best teams around. They pioneered the concept of high-profile matches between top clubs from different countries. The United Soccer Association league in North America began in 1967, before there were any North American teams ready to play in it. The organisers decided to import some top teams from Europe and South America to play the brief season so that summer, Wolverhampton Wanderers became the LA Wolves and for a few weeks, their home was the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, a ground whose current capacity is 93607, larger than any ground I have seen on this trip, even Wembley. If you remember some shenanigans from the mid-1980s with a jetpack and several dozen grand pianos, that was the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
