The balls used to be pigs' bladders, inflated orally. After Richard Lindon's wife died from a disease which she caught by blowing into a pig's bladder, he invented the leather ball inflated using a pump. He produced spherical and ellipsoidal balls for use in different variations of the game. Those designs eventually became soccer balls and rugby balls.
