The situation regarding counties in England has been a bit of a mess ever since the restructuring in 1997. Some towns and cities are now administered separately from any county and therefore sometimes get listed as if they were counties themselves. If we ignore the current situation and go back to the list of counties which existed from 1974 to 1997, the list which I remember from my youth, then there are 46 of them. I'm now in Warwickshire, which is the 44th one that I have visited on this trip. I won't be going to any more. The two which I missed were Cornwall and the Isle of Wight. At Plymouth Argyle's ground, I was about 3.2 km away from Cornwall in a straight line and about 5.2 km by road but it was already dark when I left the ground and I didn't fancy making the detour just to bag another county. At Portsmouth's ground, I was about 9 km from the Isle of Wight in a straight line but I couldn't have gone there because it's an island.
