Now I'll explain some of the categories of places that I want to visit other than the 116 grounds currently in the top five divisions.

One category is the sites of the 12 grounds of the clubs which played in the inaugural season of the Football League in 1888-1889, the first football league in the world. Some of them are still football grounds now but others have been demolished. Anfield is one which is still in use, although not by its original club.

Another category is the sites of the 20 grounds which were home to teams in the top division in the 1995-1996 season. That was about the only time when I had any interest in football and could actually tell you what club anyone played for. Prior to starting to research this trip, I couldn't have named anybody at all and said with any degree of confidence that they were still a professional football player, let alone which club they played for, and until about a week ago, the only footballer I could name for certain was a Tranmere player with the silly name of Max Power. 1995-1996 around the time when many clubs started to move to new grounds which met the new safety rules. 15 of the 20 top division grounds from that season are still in use so I will be visiting them anyway. Anfield is one of them. I thought it would be interesting though to see what had become of the other 5.
