The flagpole just to the right of the man is actually one of the masts of Brunel's ship the SS Great Eastern, which was six times the size of any previous ship, had sails, paddlewheels and a propeller, and didn't really work very well. It made a few passenger voyages, laid the first proper transatlantic cable and ended up being used as advertising space on the Mersey. When it was scrapped, the mast was brought here.
