In 2003, in the view of the club's management, Wimbledon FC was renamed Milton Keynes Dons and relocated to Milton Keynes, a new town 75 km away which had no major football club. The move wasn't popular with the fans, the Football Association, the Football League, the local council, parliament or the press, who were all generally of the opinion that a football club belonged to its local community. Luton Town had been considering the 25 km move to Milton Keynes in the 1980s but had backed down after seeing how badly the idea was received. In response, Wimbledon's old fans in this part of London set up a club called AFC Wimbledon.

There were then several years of legal battles over which club was the true successor to the original Wimbledon FC. Initially, the FA decided that MK Dons were the successors, which was why they inherited Wimbledon FC's place in the third division and AFC Wimbledon had to enter the league hierarchy much lower down. The official opinion has changed though and eventually, MK Dons had to give up any claims to the history, trophies and copyrights of the original club. It is the fans' club, AFC Wimbledon, who now have permission to use a womble as their mascot. I've noticed that in the BBC's lists of fixtures and results, AFC Wimbledon is now referred to as simply "Wimbledon" but gets positioned in alphabetical lists as if its name was "AFC Wimbledon".
