Before I started planning this trip, I thought it was only Anfield which had a stand called the Kop. In fact a lot of grounds have them. The name doesn't particularly describe any feature of the stand except that it was originally used for standing spectators, as most of the stands were in the old grounds. The name comes from a hill called Spion Kop in South Africa. It was said that the soldiers lined up on the hillside in a photograph taken during the Boer Wars resembled spectators at a football match.
