This is the largest stadium in Britain and the second largest in Europe. Its current capacity is 90000. The record attendance here was for the very first game played in the old stadium, the FA Cup final of 1923. The attendances at the previous three finals had been low so the 1923 final was quite heavily advertised. Coupled with the fine weather on the day, the easy transport links to this area and the fact that there was a London team playing, that led to far more perople than expected turning up to watch. The official attendance figure is 127000 but estimates of the true number are anywhere from 200000 to 300000. Many of them ended up having to stand on the grass, packed tightly right up to the white lines at the edge of the playing area.
