The bronze cockerel on the roof was made in 1909 by a former player and has become the emblem of the club. He chose a cockerel because Henry Percy, known as Harry Hotspur, owned fighting cocks fitted with small spurs. Why a football club in London is named after a 14th century nobleman from the far North of England in the first place is less clear.
