In the early 20th century, many British cities had their own telephone companies, which in some cases were owned by the local councils. Gradually, they were all taken over by the Post Office, except for the network in Hull. The telephone department of the Post Office was later privatised to form British Telecom and this little area of Hull, Beverley and surrounding villages is the only region which BT doesn't serve. The local company, Kingston Communications, uses the same model of phone box as the red BT ones, but painted cream.
