 I thought my choice for today was between either staying on the main road, which has been fine so far but might become busier as it approached Dunedin, or turning off in Waihola, about 17 km on from here, and crossing a big hill to reach the quieter road along the coast. I had thought, correctly, that that route would be tarmac but I've now noticed that the only paper map I have of this area, which is a 1:1000000 map of the whole country, marks that road as being gravel but shows a tarmac road which turns off here in Milton and heads along the coast. I'm now trying to find it.
